November 15, 2016–I have realized that this post didn’t publish so I am back dating it.
Well I’ve probably sat down 10 times to write this post and it is definitely not an easy write. As most of you know, I’m an American of Greek descent transplanted to Canada. Saying that it has now been a week since fellow Americans took to the polls in what has become the shot heard around the world. I understand that American politics is followed by so many since it is a Superpower but with the internet, social media and today’s society in general everyone has instantaneous information.
I know that some of my friends voted for her and some of my friends voted for him and way too many of my friends didn’t vote at all because they hated who they had to choose from. I saw a statistic that said 46.9% of the American population didn’t vote. Now honestly I don’t remember an election that I didn’t vote in, since I was eligible. I always said you can’t complain if you don’t vote. Half of Americans didn’t feel that it was in their best interest to get off their butts to vote. I’m sorry if this statement offends some but truly it bothers me. Are these the people who are protesting in various cities throughout the US? Are the stories of the buses being found a few blocks up from the protest areas true and they are staged? Are the Craig’s List ads asking for protesters true? Honestly I have no idea. But what I do know is some of the sources that people are sharing as news sources are far from it. I was able watch the Boston and New York protests live from people who I don’t know but took to their phones and posted it as they were marching. I was able to see the hate that they had for the President Elect. I was able to read about on Facebook from my friends of colour that they are scared. Scared to go about their business in a country that they were BORN in. I read a post from a friend who had hate slurred at him for being gay. No this “person” didn’t know him, but he was walking in a gay neighbourhood in New York City and he was verbally attacked.
Someone asked me the other day is this really America? Can Americans be so full of hate. Hate is everywhere and unfortunately certain things such as politics can bring out the best and worse in all of us. My America is a kind America. It is one where we help our fellow human, not one where we watch them die in front of us afraid to help. My America is one of love regardless of your colour, sex, sexual orientation, religious belief, etc. My America is the one where you’re able to speak your mind regardless if the people in the room are on the same page as you. I can only hope that my America and the people who believe these things, like I do will continue to fight for what we believe in.
