Language

So my darling husband has been working on renovations the last ten days at work and has been gone for many hours at a time.  So he was seeing her sleeping when he left in the morning and sleeping when he arrived in the wee hours of the night.  If I dropped in to see him he’d ask how the little one was doing and my normal response would be, she’s great, I just put her down or she’s great, I just put her to sleep.  My husband looked at me weirdly whenever I used either saying.  I guess I really wasn’t thinking about how it sounded but rather was saying what the task at hand had been.  We’ve now decided that I would say I put her in her crib and she’s sleeping for the night.  It makes my hubby feel better…now let’s just hope I can remember 😉

Is there any language that you use/used that was questioned by family or friends?  Any funny stories?

Happy Friday everyone!!

Busy bees

Sorry for not having written in a while, the little Miss and I have been busy bees.  Yiayia and pappou have come to visit us and we’ve been having a great time.  Nothing beats having them spend time with my little one, it means so much to all of us.  We have had some great morning walks along the lakefront and of course nothing beats bath time and getting yiayia all wet!

I can’t believe she turned 3 months yesterday!  It is amazing to see her little personality grow and of course see her achieve all these new firsts.  We’re not rolling yet but we certainly can lift our heads and we seem very drawn to the new TV that daddy bought.  Needless to say mommy now listens to the radio a lot more!

She loves to be outside and I can’t wait to see her explore the outdoors next summer.  As we get into the dog days of summer we’re trying to find a balance of outdoor activities (early morning before it gets too hot) and some indoor ones.  What did you like to do with your newborn that you’d recommend we’d try?  Let us know.

Opinions, opinions, opinions

One of my favourite quotes comes from a Salt & Peppa song of all places: “Opinions are like ass holes and everybody’s got one!”  I don’t think I truly knew what this meant until I had a child.  It amazes me how people always have two cents to share when it comes to children.  How you should dress them, how you should raise them, how you should scold them, etc. I don’t believe that I ever offered an opinion to my friends who were raising children before me unless I was asked, but if I did offer unsolicited advice, please accept my sincerest apology.

I also never realized the amount of parenting groups that are on the various social media channels.  Parents essentially post their problems and in one group, have up to 10,000 people who can ‘advise’ them on the issue having gone through it themselves or just offering advice.

During our mommy group yesterday we had a sleep specialist come in and talk to us about things we can do to get our little ones down.  She referenced how please as a parent, take the time to seek out professional advice as opposed to just posting your questions on Facebook for randoms to comment.  I found it interesting that in the day of social media and everyone being so connected with our smartphones we rather post/tweet/pin our issue than actually seek out knowledgeable individuals in the field of our issue.  Now having been up for 48 hours and at your wits end I understand it is easier to post something on Facebook at 3am than wait until 9am when an office will open but I just advise be careful as to what advice you are getting and how you’re using it.

Opinion, opinions, opinions, the only ones that really matter are those of yours and your partner.  Take everything with a grain of salt and remember you’re the parent for a reason!

Happy Canada Day! Happy 4th of July!

As an American transplanted to Canada I get to celebrate two holidays this week.  First, today is Canada Day.  A day to celebrate Canada’s birthday.  Later this week we’ll get to celebrate the 4th of July.  With everything going on in the world it is amazing to be able to celebrate not one but two of these holidays!

The past week was a great one.  I think the little one may have been going through a growth spurt, not that I’m an expert and all…LOL not!   But she displayed some of the actions that we had at 4 weeks.  We’ll find out at her next appointment.  Hubby and I take bets now on height and weight, did/do any of you do this?

One interesting phenomenon that I know all of you moms out there and probably some of you dads have been a part of is the one handed eating.  Your child is cranky and you can’t do anything to please them so you hold them while at the table.  Now I can count on one hand the times this has happened to us but one was this past weekend.  The little one was asleep as we decided to stop for some lupper (lunch/supper) at a local sushi restaurant.  As luck would have it her eyes fluttered wide open as our water was put on the table.  I knew that the quiet phase wouldn’t last throughout the entire meal.  Now there were only two other tables of people at the restaurant so I wasn’t too worried about her crying but was conscious of these people.  So as she became crankier I picked her up out of her car seat and held her.  The goal was to get her back to sleep.  After some rocking and some walking this did the trick.  So at this point the food is on the table and I have a sleeping child in my arms.  I wasn’t 100% confident in my put down technique so what did I do but hold her and eat.  So here I am with chopsticks in hand eating my food with the eyes of all the servers on me.  It really was quite comical for me as I really didn’t think anything of it and they were in awe.  I figured that none had kids.   Hubby and I enjoyed our meal, I put her back in the car seat and she slept all the way home.  A few months ago I may have seen a woman like me and thought she was crazy or asked  myself why even go out if you can’t enjoy it.  The thing is I did enjoy it.  The food was good, the company was even better and all was well in babyland!

So again regardless of where you might be reading from this week: Happy Canada Day! Happy 4th of July!

Greek Time

So I am one of those people who is always early. If I’m supposed to be somewhere at noon I rather be outside at 11:30 or 11:40 waiting to do in then be late. This is funny considering most Greeks are always late and on Greek time. So it is very hard for me when I’m not in control of the situation and that seems to be the case now that I have a little one. Saturday was a perfect example, the goal was to to go for a ride and then make it to Walmart on the return. Well little miss decided she wasn’t having that and had a meltdown as we made it to the parking lot. Needless to say, we went home.

On Sunday we had dinner plans with a friend. Hubby and I loaded up the car and off we went 40 minutes early to ride around a nit before dinner. This time success, she slept the entire time! Now please don’t tell me we’re spoiling her by driving around and we’ll be stuck doing this forever, it is not a normal occurrence for us.

So last week we started in a mommy group. I selected this one that is a paid one because it exposes you to something different every week. Last week’s class was a set and greet during the first part and then we did Baby Salsa. It was a great workout for mommy, baby slept the whole time, but hey as the youngest baby in the class that’s her prerogative. Today’s class is on baby food. We’re not ready for that yet but I’m excited!

For those of you following the World Cup what do you think so far? We’re pretty excited and will be cheering on our team at 4:00pm today!!

Another Beautiful Sunrise

Well it is official, I have seen another beautiful sunrise.  That is more sunrises than I witnessed my entire life before I had a baby.  Yes there was one particular night in Beantown when I witnessed the sunrise and those two nights on the Greek island of Mykonos when we closed down the nightclub but all in all I usually made it to bed before the sun came out.  Who knew that motherhood would change that?  No my baby wasn’t up with me, yet again she and hubby were peacefully snuggled in bed.  But as I’m finding out the more new moms I meet, this tends to be a common occurrence.  You either finish a feeding and can’t get back to sleep or wake up because baby hasn’t woken up for a feeding and can’t get back to sleep.  I’d like to say that I solved the world’s problems last night but honestly after checking Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google+, emails, CNN, my hometown paper and local papers, really there wasn’t much more to do.  Not much is on TV between 3am and 5am other than various infomercials even when you have 900 channels.

So what do you do when you can’t sleep?  Do you read? Warm milk?  Help a momma out and share your tips!!

Little Monkey

Well if you know my hubby you know that monkeys are his sort of thing.  There were many that lived in the house before I moved in.  So it would make sense that we call our little one our little monkey or usually squirmy monkey as she is a squirm-er!

So it was fitting that I found a local company with the same name:  Little Monkey Designs (LMD).  Diane from LMD has some unique creations that can be used for your little one’s room.  Below is a picture that I took of Little Miss’ room and the designs that we purchased.  If you want to see what else LMD has check out their website at: www.littlemonkeydesigns.ca

and to my friends outside of Canada, not to worry Diane ships worldwide!

40 Day Blessing

So my little one received her 40 Day Blessing this about 10 days ago.  Daddy, baby and I got ready, loaded up the diaper bag, car seat, blankets, etc., and off we went to church.  We got there right at the end as people were receiving the andithero.  Since I was an unblessed woman I couldn’t actually enter the church just the exo-narthex.  I guess going into it I didn’t realize that it was as much about me as it was about the baby.  I know my fellow Greek moms shared with me their experiences in a previous post but I guess I didn’t fully understand until I was there.  With my baby squirming in my hands and the priest reciting the prayers from his bible, I took a second to take it all in. To think about the women who came before me and who will come after me and partake in this important part of our Orthodox faith. As I was saying to my friend yesterday via Skype, it totally took me off guard how much it was about me the mom. Our priest is very thorough so we didn’t get the drive through blessing and had time to take it all in.

The blessing then got me thinking of the next big part of our Orthodox faith as a little one, the baptism. For those of you who don’t know in the Greek Orthodox faith you are baptized, confirmed and receive your first communion all in one sacrament. The planning has begun and I’m excited for the little one to officially enter our religion. I just keep wondering if she’ll be a screamer and cry during her ‘dunking’? How did your little ones do during their baptisms? Did they cry? Were they screamers or happy campers?

A day of rest?!

So it is 6:25am and I’m sitting with my first frappe of the day. For those of you who aren’t Greek frappe is the Greek’s version of iced coffee. I have been up since 2:00. I awoke worried that my little one hadn’t woken up yet. As one mommy so well put it the other day, I wake up freaking out that they’re still breathing! Well that was me last night/this morning, of course the little one was fine, she decided to have an extra long slumber before her feeding. Well once the feeding was done she wouldn’t burp well so all in all that took 45 minutes. Now I’m not sure about you but after 45 minutes of being awake, I’m done. So I did what everyone does but you’re not supposed to do, I picked up my phone. I checked Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, I was even tempted to look at Google+. I played my Words With Friends and checked emails. Put the phone away and waited for this amazing slumber and rest to take over my body. Ummm yeah not so much! So I Googled the best transitions for getting your baby to sleep the night in their crib (our little one is still in her bassinet), I Googled the transition of ready made formula to powder or concentrate (we’ve tried both and she didn’t like either).   I even Googled ways a mom can sleep better at night. That was a joke! I listened to my husband snore (sorry babe) and my little one gurgle, cry and moan in her sleep, even getting up a few times to make sure she was okay. Everyone was fine and snuggled in their beds while visions of sugar plums or ponies, danced in their heads. And then there was me…so I did it…I got out of bed. On the couch I found out that our TV was down, really we have to do something with this high speed internet that never works when you need it! When it came back on Mystic Pizza was my show of choice. I put away a load of the baby’s laundry, folded a load of our laundry and put in another load. I paid some bills and even took a shower. And now I sit here typing away sipping my frappe at 6:30am. Not sure about what you’re planning to do on your Sunday but I feel pretty accomplished already!
